A child who tries to protect other children from being disciplined

While I was babysitting, one of the children hit the other. I had no choice but to put him in timeout in a different room. But when I did, the other child tried to stop me (by grabbing my hands and trying to keep me from being able to move away). And in his best attempt at an authoritative tone, he told me "I cannot allow you to punish him". Both children are under six years of age.

Sounds like a handful! I would not babysit such difficult children if I were you!

I actually think it shows good character that instead of gloating that the other kid is facing consequences for hitting him, his first instinct is to protect him. But it's still hard to deal with.
