I don't understand the question. You're asking "Why are hot dogs called hot dogs?". So we see you agree with it being called that. So you may as well ask "Why are cars called cars?".

The word car comes from the root of the word carriage. It has a source that is pretty logical.

So why don't you ask why are cars called cars?
Because that is not the question. Yes, there are other questions to be asked, but not all at once. Ultimately, we do not choose because the choice we are making is better than the alternative, but because it is better than not choosing.

It's commonly believed to be from dachshunds. However, it is unknown how the dachshunds feel about it.
